France 3 Employing the pathos appeal, Gilbert uses the emotion of the reader and the connection that he makes with the reader to pull them to his side. For example, he uses a tone that makes sure that the reader is as close to his perspective as possible. The use of rhetoric questions is used to ensure that they agree with his viewpoint. To show that our future imagination fails to capture a number of details, Gilbert asks, “have you ever wondered why you often make commitments that you deeply regret when the moment to fulfill them arrives?” (116). If one answers this question that indeed they accept to do a chore in the distant future and when the day draws near they wonder whether they are the same people who made the same decision, they are agreeing with Gilbert that the mind omits many things when planning for the future. This is the basis of “The Hound of Silence.” By using the readers emotions, Gilbert makes them agree that they give more detail to closer events than those far away. Ethos is about the credibility and believability of the writer. Although it is not as pronounced in the chapter, Gilbert uses his own experience especially the survey to cement his argument.
