Throwing Progression: The throwing progression is one of the most critical drills that a team can exercise and should be a staple at the start of every practice and game. So many key fundamental skills are worked on throughout the duration of this drill, from throwing angle and release point to footwork and body weight shifting. In addition, this drill is a crucial factor in the health of each player’s throwing arm as they endure a long season filled with high intensity throwing. The best way to prevent injury is to prepare and loosen up prior to jumping into the full speed action. This drill does exactly that by slowly warming the arm up to that act of throwing by starting with very short tosses and leading into long distance heaves. I would utilize this drill on every age group of players due to its heavy emphasis on the basic fundamentals that are always evident in the sport as well its large role in maintaining player health. The only thing I would to the drill we participated in would be one final long toss step that really stretches out the arm and prepares it for the high intensity throws of a practice or game.
