in less developed areas. In India, majority of the population live in villages and paradoxically, most of the doctors in the region are based in urban centres (General, & Range, 2011). Methodology Research design The proposed research is a qualitative study that will use questionnaires as the primary source of information. In addition, secondary information will be obtained from medicine journals especially on dental health and self-medication in India. This study will take a phenomenological approach to analyse the research objectives and interpret the information from questionnaires and other data collection tools that will be used (Liamputtong 2013). This approach is relevant to this exercise as it allows the researcher to centre the research findings to the perspective of the participants regardless of the researcher’s personal views. This is especially crucial in identifying the reasons why patients use self‐medication in dental healthcare. Study Population State of Kerala in India is spread over an area of 38,863 km 2 . As at 2011, the total population was 33,387,677. The population also boost of a total literacy rate of 93.91% (Census, 2014). There is no authoritative data that outlines the statistics of dental awareness in the state, however, in most parts of India, basic medical management including oral healthcare is not viewed in isolation, but as a segment of a wholesome system of Medicare that coincide with home drugs and alternative remedies. In the study population, responsible alternate medication is a crucial component of self-care (Verma, Mohan, & Pandey, 2010). Current research on contemporary practices concerning self-medication for the dental condition is considered to be of vital importance for policy formulation. There is dearth information on self-medication practices for dental problems in India. Furthermore, scientific

DENTAL HEALTHCARE SELF-CARE RESEARCH PROPOSAL 9 literature is also scarce. The researcher will be determined to fill in this informational gap by identifying an appropriate study sample. Sample Size A pilot study will be conducted before the actual research to determine the sample size. In addition, it will be used to pre-test the reliability and validity of research instruments. In management research, data gathered normally have a powerful influence on business and individuals who seek objective information (Boaz & Ashby, 2003). The more coherent a study is, the more credible its findings and recommendation. Pilot study is crucial when testing research hypothesis or uncovering research problems that may arise in the course of the data gathering and analysis (JustStand, 2015). In this study, pilot study will be used to determine the prevalence rate and error probability from the sample size. Random sampling technique will be used to determine the final sample.
