I teach in a district that has a diverse population relating to race, poverty, and ethnicity. A student’s race does not indicate the achievement gap in the school. I do believe that poverty plays a more important role. Based on my experience as a child living in poverty, the parental involvement of students living in poverty tends to be lower, than those living in stable economic situations. 5 Initial Rating- 2- After reading over the common belief background for item number 5 my rating has changed from a 2 to a 4. The case studies have opened my eyes to realize that as a teacher I have the power to empower student learning in my classroom. 2- Question 2- Gillborn (2005) defines Institutional racism as a multidimensional concept referring to structural, non-obvious and non-aggressive acts of discrimination. These subtle forms of discrimination are problematic because they often remain unnoticed and have long lasting negative effects on minority student’s educational opportunities (Mampaey and Zanoni, 2015). School show institutional racism by enforcing a monolingual education and instruction and the exclusion of minority religions or holidays from school environments to name a couple(Mampaey and Zanoni, 2015). As an educator, I have seen both of these situations arise in the school I teach; however, I feel that because it is considered a norm in the school setting the parents of these diverse student do not feel comfortable questioning the
