In the mid-1990s, businesses started utilizing the Internet, the Web, and additional electronic touch points (e.g., e-mail, point-of-sale terminals) to control customer relationships. In opposition to customer-facing applications, where clients deal straight with a business representative, clients communicate directly with these technologies and applications. Such claims are named customer-touching CRM applications or electronic CRM (e-CRM) applications. Consumers usually apply these applications to benefit themselves.
