portrays the moments during the contract signing as very melancholy saying, “Mariam signed her name—the meem , the reh , the ya , and the meem again—conscious of all the eyes on her hand,” (p.54). The uncomfortable and gloomy feeling created by the author reinforces the feelings Mariam has toward Rasheed and toward the marriage. The signing of the contract to marry Rasheed is a symbol of the power and dominance Rasheed has over Mariam. Hosseini writes, “Through the mournful of grit and pebbles, Mariam mumbled a plea. Tears were leaking out the corner of her eyes ...Mariam chewed. Something in the back of her mouth cracked... Mariam spit out pebbles, blood and the fragments of two broken molars,” (p.104). Throughout the novel, Mariam continues to struggle with the abuse and neglect she receives from Rasheed and the contract is a symbol of the restrictions placed on Mariam.

At the end of the novel, Mariam signs a similar contract with completely different meaning. When Mariam signs the contract to her death, she understands the reasons she must pass and knows that it is for the best. Mariam had thoughts of the happy family Laila would have
