(2pts) Part II: Digestive Enzyme Research (LO 4, S1, S3)The small intestine has digestive enzymes embedded in the membranes of the microvilli called “brush boarder enzymes”. These enzymes break down food molecules just before absorption takes place. The three enzymes that break down carbohydrates are sucrase, maltase and lactase. Sucrase breaks down sucrose, maltase breaks down maltose and lactase breaks downlactose. Some people have difficulty breaking down lactose and are called “lactose intolerant”. This was actually quite normal until a few thousand years ago. Click on the link provided by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and learn about the research dealing with lactose intolerance and its relationship to anthropology and evolution.
