Ponyboy and Johnny run towards the burning church, thinking that their cigarettes sparked the flames. As Ponyboy runs into blazing inferno, all he thinks is, “We started it. We started it. We started it!” (91). The phrase “We started it” suggests that Ponyboy recognizes that the lives of the children are at stake because of his actions and it is his and Johnny’s responsibility to save them. By putting the security of others before their own, poor, vulnerable greasers Johnny and Ponyboy demonstrate heroism. Although heroism sometimes involves jumping into burning buildings and saving lives, sometimes your words can also save someone in need. Ponyboy, despite being a greaser who would rather keep his mouth shut, also shows heroism by standing up for Sodapop when Darry yells at him. While narrating from Pony’s perspective, Hinton writes, “I exploded. ‘You don’t yell at him!’ Darry wheeled me around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door” (50).
