4 1. Language games are of great value at the end of a lesson, when the teacher wants to firmly establish a certain language pattern. 2. The games reinforce what the children have previously learned because they use the same structures and vocabulary. 3. Games allow the children to learn through play and enjoyment. 4. Activities that are directed at learning, practicing and using language spontaneously are considered to be language games; they do not need to be active, physical games. 5. These games should be a natural conclusion to round off the language activities presented in a language lesson. 6. A language game is usually played towards the end of a theme when it allows children to practice the new vocabulary or to revise old vocabulary or language structures. 7. Children learn while having fun. Language games assist with socialization among children. 8. The practice social skills and this fits in well with the communicative approach. Children also develop sensory, auditory and visual perception. 9. They learn to follow instructions and take turns. 10. Group and pair work are essential strategies when playing games. 11. Young children learn best in small groups because they have more opportunities and do not have to wait too long before playing again. The communication approach to second language teaching can be regarded as ‘Language in action’. Discuss the characteristics of this approach. May2013 (10), oct2010(6) pg 31 1.
