The rhythmic tension takes the music forward which makes me want to get up and move. My husband tells me “it’s too early” and so I am stuck at the table tapping my foot and bopping my head. The overall rhythm of the Tommy Hogan band is upbeat, lively, and super energetic. I almost felt like we should take the party outside so we could all enjoy dancing to the beats. Ivories Jazz Lounge is a bit small, and there wasn’t really an area for the audience to get up and move. However, there is definitely a rhythmic feel of blues, but in addition to cool jazz and even some southern funk. From what I have learned about dissonance, I can identify it when listening to the Tommy Hogan band. There is clear harmony not only in the instruments, but sometimes the bass player will come up to the front man’s microphone and sing the harmony chords to support the melody. The tension between the harmony and melody sparks my interest because my ear wants to resolve the tension and create a more restful sound in the music. As far as my interpretation of this type of jazz , I feel as though this band in particular change the pitch to keep it interesting, use legato tonguing, and slurring. They are certainly not a classical or symphonic band, so they don’t play with a precise and accurate attack to presenting their music, but I do think they use harmonics that intensify the sounds and give it a bit of an edge. Lastly, to ensure I cover the five guidelines for defining jazz- the interaction between the band and the audience was phenomenal from beginning to end. You can tell that especially Tommy LOVES to entertain (however the whole band were “in it” for the entire performance.

TOMMY HOGAN BAND 5 It’s also clear that the band members genuinely like each other. There is a sense of brotherhood and camaraderie. Because jazz focuses on improvisation, it is crucial the members have positive communication while playing. The Tommy Hogan band listens carefully to one another, not one member outshines another, and they all did a great job responding to what was happening from on stage and to what was happening in the audience. Though my husband wouldn’t label himself as a “jazz fan” he expressed having a blast while listening to the Tommy Hogan Band at Ivories Jazz Lounge. Personally, one suggestion I would have is to move the tables (where people order dinner) toward the back because it was nearly impossible to have any sort of conversation with the people at your table.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
