Piedmont Hills High School - AP Chemistry 2017-2018 Phan, Madalyn Period Laboratory Experiment: Chromatography Lab PROCEDURE Part 1: Making the Graphs for all the Pens 1. The pen was used to draw a mark on the chromatography paper. 2. The paper was measured against the beaker and the extra was folded over 3. A thin layer of ethanol was poured into a flask, enough to fully cover the bottom of the flask 4. The fold was hooked on the the edge of the flask to hold the paper up 5. A piece of a paper towel was placed on the top of the flask 6. The paper was allowed to stay in the flask until the solvent stopped moving up. 7. Steps 1-6 were repeated for each pen. Part 2: Testing The Message 1. A strip of paper containing was cut from the note 2. The side with the ink was placed facing the chromatography paper 3. A drop of ethanol was dropped on the piece of note 4. The ink was transferred to the bottom of a chromatography paper by rubbing the note piece against the chromatography paper 5. The chromatography paper was measured against a flask and the extra on the top was folded over 6. Ethanol was poured into the flask (just enough to completely cover the bottom of the flask) 7. The fold on the paper was hooked on the side of the flask and the paper was placed in the flask so that the ethanol would touch the paper below the ink mark 8. A paper towel was placed on top of the flask to cover it 9. The paper was allowed to stay in the flask until the ethanol stopped moving up 10. The paper was allowed to dry and then compared to the other chromatographs for the black pens 11. The black pens with the closest chromatographs were used to draw a line on a piece of paper 12. The ink from the paper was transferred to the chromatography paper using the same methode that was used to transfer the ink from the message 13. The papers were placed into another flask with ethanol and another graph for each pen was made 14. The new graphs were compared to the graph from the message DATA AND RESULTS *The pens were numbered (shown in analysis question #3) and the numbers were written on top of the chromatograms*
