It should be recommended that a rape kit is taken and blood samples should be screened for alcohol or drug traces. The victim’s clothes should be saved and kept in an area free of contamination. Any injuries should be documented and photographed, if permitted. Many rape victims are fragile and effectively shut down both during the crime and in the aftermath. Care should be taken so as not to upset the victim further and to make sure they can give any details that may help to convict their rapist. Memory of the event may be suppressed due its traumatic nature. It is important to have trained professionals to take statements from the victim so that thetestimony can be documented without further traumatizing them and causing more problems.Second, the detective must secure the crime scene. The crime scene includes all areas where the rape took place as well as where the suspect ran, including the vehicle and its contents.
