most feel they are paid below market. Associates feel the firm’s conservative reputation and politically-tinged matters can hurt the firm’s recruiting of diverse attorneys, and many lament how much the firm has been linked recently to the Trump campaign and administration. Satisfaction • “Having lateraled to Jones Day after working for other regional and international firms, I find Jones Day to be a fairly unique experience. The level of talent is impressive as is the cooperation among attorneys across offices and around the work. There is a very real dedication to providing clients with the best possible service and finding the right attorney to provide that service.” • “I am incredibly glad to have landed at Jones Day. I think people often think you have to make a trade-off between a ‘nice’ environment and one which provides you cutting-edge, high-stakes work. After 1.5 years at the firm, it has been confirmed that I didn’t have to make this tradeoff. I regularly work on matters that are on the front page above-the-fold, while getting to do very substantive work (very little doc review). The partners I work with make efforts to include me and give me opportunities for growth. Jones Day’s attitude is that everyone they hire could be partner some day, so the attitude toward associate development is different than at a place that takes the attitude that you’ll be there two years and then you’re out.”

Random short-term assignments are not as satisfying, but it appears that those tend to phase out as one gains seniority. The schedule is the hardest part, not necessarily because it is very busy (which it is), but instead because litigation associates tend to work with many different partners so there can be a ton of fluctuation in workload (too heavy or too light at any given time).” • “The work I do and the people I work with are remarkable. The only reason I do not give higher ranks is because of Jones Day as an institution, which treats its associates with ambivalence or as a means to an end (revenue).” Firm Culture • “This firm has a non-competitive culture and that is one of the main reasons I came here. I do not feel like everyone is out for themselves and I think that makes us all better. We truly work with other offices every single day. We have a lot of in office events but not many social opportunities out of office. I wish there were more because I am new to the city and would like to meet more people. At the same time, many of our lawyers are involved with outside groups and they have all been forthcoming about me joining and getting to know the city that way.” • “Lawyers socialize frequently, although we are thankfully not a ‘work hard, party hard’ type of firm—people also respect if you want to leave work to be with your family. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
