Meyer Werft of Germany must develop global pipelines with players in the Miami cruise cluster, like they did with Carnival, to ensure that they receive the contracts from the actual cruise companies to keep their shipyards operating. What Do These Clusters Demonstrate? Both of these clusters involved in the Cruise industry, discussed above, demonstrate several things about clusters. First, physical conditions of a particular area can initially dictate where industries locate. Second, as described in “Locating Global Advantage,” proximity to the customer base and to competitors often contributes to where a company locates (Kenney). This can be seen in the Miami cluster in the way that the industry clustered by the largest route-the Caribbean, the largest initial customer base-senior citizens, and with all major competitors nearby. Third, as seen in the development of both clusters, positive feedback loops take hold. A positive feedback loop is what happens when something in a particular location gives a firm a slight advantage over other firms located elsewhere, resulting in more firms migrating to that location (Kenney 2/16/2011). In the article, “Organizational Emergence: The Origin and Transformation of Branson, Missouri’s Musical Theaters,” the author, Todd Chiles examines howthe theater cluster in Branson got started, attracted tourists and then attracted more entrepreneurs

Capeloto 17to invest in more theaters in the area which attracted more tourists, etc and the cluster begins to self-reinforce as the area becomes successful. The final thing that the Miami cluster and the European shipbuilding and related knowledge cluster demonstrate is how entrepreneurs help develop clusters. As Maryann Feldman analyzed in her work, “Creating a Cluster While Buildinga Firm: Entrepreneurs and the Formation of Industrial Clusters,” entrepreneurs have an importantrole within cluster formation. They set out to create and build their own firms, but in the process they create and stimulate the surrounding region as well. Successful cluster formation requires multiple waves of entrepreneurs coming into the cluster (Feldman). This can be seen clearly in the development of the Miami cluster. The physical conditions and the proximity to primary markets of Miami draw the first entrepreneurs to develop cruise companies in the area, and then a positive feedback loop took hold self reinforcing the cluster thus attracting more entrepreneurs.Michael Porter in his article, “Clusters and the New Economics of Competition,” discusses five keys or elements that being in a cluster provides. These five things that companies have access to as a result of being located within a cluster are better access to employees and suppliers, access to specialized information through networks, complementarities or related industries, access to institutions and public goods such as universities for knowledge creation, and finally each company is better motivated and are better able to measure where they are and where their company needs to be against competitors. As shown in the cluster’s individual
