Surname 2 the country out of the Vietnam War quagmire. Johnson could certainly not have imagined what he had begun. By the presidential election of 1968, America had become entangled in a conflict that was to take on extreme greater magnitudes than anybody could have thought in 1965. Richard Nixon as well had political problems that were similar to those of Johnson and therefore the problem that Johnson left did not go away when Richard Nixon took over. After taking over his presidency, Richard Nixon assured the American people that he would decrease the U.S. troop numbers in Vietnam. He dogged a plan he named "Vietnamization," where the United States would slowly draw from the war, sending off the South Vietnamese military to bear the weight of the fighting (Nixon). In spite of his promise to get American GIs home, the levels of American ground troops in Vietnam still remained high and the Nixon government prolonged the war into the bordering countries of Cambodia and Laos. This was a strategy that Nixon used for his political gains and this helped him in running for the next elections since he was running on a platform that was opposing the war. Conclusion In conclusion, the Vietnam quagmire was a predicament that took a toll on America and its citizens. Nobody saw the effects of engaging in this war come in the way they came to the nation as such a blow. The war was very expensive for the country and caused such an economic turmoil that the country is still dealing with. The war hurt the legacy and reputation of President Johnson causing him not to re-run for elections. The Vietnam War was also used by some
