Most consumers would not be will in g to pay more for the same produ ct thus paving the way for criminals to profit from human tr afficking. Trafficking is illegal and morally wron g , but profits sometimes outweigh the morals. In order end human trafficking , the penalties must be as horrible as the horrific cond i tions that victims , especially the children are forced to endure . Heightened awareness is a key element to eliminating trafficking however it must be a co l laborative effort by society , not just those that are directly affected. If hars h er penalties and heightened awareness are going to be effective , then consumers need to be prepar e d to pat a little more for the materials they use every day. In 1995 the discovery of seventy-two Thai garment workers forc ed to work in slave-like conditions in El M onte, California spurred awareness to the problem of human trafficking . [Wea14] . Although m ost w ere shocked and appalled by this story , it is one of many stories that have been caused by eco nomic situations that few can relate to . The Thai workers were looking fo r an opportunity to support their families and most likel y coerced into coming to America with promises of a dece nt income and a better life. Technology h as given way for traffickers to prey on those that are lo oking to earn money and come to America as well as underage boys and girls used by sexual predators. Shows like “To C atch a Predator” made us aware of how easy it is to hide behind a keyboard and find unsuspectin g children and yet parents are too bus y to monitor their children’s internet use. 2
