Buddha Biography (in brief) - it’s a devotional document- it’s the specific claims made by buddhist nots actual history - Shows us ideal path buddhist should follow - The Buddha is not just a normal human Buddha - budh means enlightened or awakened - Buddha means an awakened/ enlightened one Bodhisattva- means who is enlightened but whose essence hasn’t achieved enlightenment yet - used to describe historical Buddha before he achieved enlightenment - also used to talk about previous lives of buddha before they came one early Buddha does not deny vedic believes of gods and spirits but those gods and spirits are part of the cycle of samsara so they age and die and become part of the cycle of samsara Buddha was in heaven waiting for his final birth that would bring him up to Buddhism - born to the family of a local king - when the Buddha realized the time was right to take last human birth he decensed in form of white elephant and entered into his mother queen - on her way to a pilgrimage she stopped and realized it was time to give birth - she reached up to grab branch of a tree and painlessly the child steps out of her side and takes 7 steps and with each step a flower springs up at his feet - he finally announces he is the chief of the world and this is his last birth - passage through the birth canal was one of the things that wiped away the knowledge f previous lives so he did not forget his previous life (he was born out of the side) *Miraculous Birth - Two-fold prophecy of the prince’s potential future destinies - Mother presented child to the king and brought in diviners (brahmin) to read the childs future - The seers say he will have one of two potential futures - In one case he will be a great and moral leader and brings dharma of proper rule - In the other case if he renounces the world he will become the awaken Buddha Aside: South Asian physiognomists and divination Life of ease (in royal palace) - Upon hearing this his father wants him to become the next ruler and tries to prevent him from developing desire to become a renunciate to abandon life as the king - He makes his life very easy in the palace to keep him in the real world - Young prince realizes he wants to see the people he will rule over so he askes the father for permission- the father says yes but sends out guards to take away all the unpleasant things the son would see
