For milder episodes of depression, you can use cognitive behavioral therapy You try to alter negative thinking by specifically target cognitive biases o Stimulus in depression often less clear than in anxiety Stimulus is often person’s view of themselves and world around them Rates of depression are going up – it might be the environment that increases rates of depressions o It might be that we are more comfortable talking about it, so we might be reporting it more o It might be that we are better at identifying it in ourselves, so we are reporting it more It is possible to be diagnosed w/ depression in childhood – toddlers can be diagnosed w/ depression o Average age of onset of depression is around 15-16 years old Behavioral activation – helps people reengage w/ activities that they used to enjoy o Make people go through motions of certain activities even if they don’t feel like doing them Lecture 21 – Aggression Psychology in the News - Narcissism People high in narcissism have grandiose of being admired by others or being exceptional people o Research has shown that narcissists seem to be liked when we first meet them o Narcissists tend to become disliked over time despite being liked when first met Research has looked into different motives of narcissism o (1) Admiration – want to be admired by others, think of themselves as exceptional people o (2) Rivalry – to be better than others, to push down others to be better than other When narcissists enter a new social situation, motive for admiration is most strong – nice, polite, charming o After some time, motive for rivalry takes over and become disliked since they push others down Debunk’d Myth – adult children of alcoholics display distinct profile of symptoms o Believed that these adults have distinct personality profile such as low self- esteem, difficulties w/ intimacy, and need for approval from others Reality – adult children of alcoholics are as diverse in their personalities as other adults One study created self-report checklist about personality characteristics to compare adult children o Checklist had statements commonly believed to be true about adult children of alcoholics o Self-report checklist was unsuccessful at distinguishing adult children or alcoholics & non-alcoholics
