Asn and Gln are required to make NTs (C, G, A, T and U) Anti-cancer drugs target these two AAs (specifically glutamine synthetase and asparagine synthetase inhibitors) b/c they are required for growth in certain cancers - Hormone synthesis o Thyroxine (T 4 ) Tri-iodothyronine (T 3 ); made from Tyr and iodine and is responsible for regulating various metabolic processes o Tyr dopamine & other catecholamine hormones (i.e.- epinephrine & norepinephrine) - Methylating agents: Met donates its methyl group [refer to structure and how easy it is to use] o Methyl group donated to SAM, SAW, homocysteine, and it’s part of folate cycle which makes NT bases - Nitric Oxide (NO): synthesized from Arg (AA with the most N) by NO synthase o Primary function: provides relaxation for smooth muscles especially in artery walls which blood pressure and blood flow o NO can also be made from nitrates (NO 3 ) and nitrites (NO 2 ) secreted from the salivary glands into the mouth by bacterial conversion NO in the mouth and stomach made from nitrates and nitrites function to kill microorganisms

When eaten, they get absorbed and concentrated in the salivary glands. - N transporters: Gln & Ala 37:54 REFERENCES Reference Male (5’8.5”; 70kg; 20 -24y) Reference Female (5’4.5”; 56kg; 20 -24y) - 15% fat - 15% bone - 45% muscle - 25% other 56g recommended protein - 27% fat - 12% bone - 36% muscle - 25% other 45g recommended protein - Origin of reference man and woman actually comes from recommendations for amounts of acceptable radiation. Adopted for nutrition - Reference human composition different from current average o Females = 167lbs; 76kg o Males= 191lbs; 87kg PROTEIN CONTENT IN FOODS - Proximate human body nutrient composition o 55-65% water; women on the lower end b/c they have more body fat o 16-18% protein o <1% CHO o 12-30% fat (females > males; females have more subcutaneous fat) o 5% minerals - Proximate composition of foods; **it is very easy to meet protein RDA (typical male eats >100g protein/ day) o Meat in stores = 50-60% water, 18% protein; ~25g protein in 3oz meat o Vegetables & Fruits > 90% water; very little protein o 3oz fish = 20% o 1.5oz cheese = 50-70% water; 9g protein o Cereals, grains and nuts = ~2g protein o 1c. soybeans = 20g (vs. other legumes = 15g/c); unusual plant source with high protein o Milk = 8g/c o 1 egg = 6g; most of protein contained in albumin - Even though we’re bigger now a lot of that is attributed to fat; § there is not a lot of protein that needs to occur. As a result, the protein RDA does not change for obesity. o We eat to satisfy NRG needs first; typically we don’t have a protein craving unless we’re not eating any at all. So when you do that you’re taking foods from a lot of different sources

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
