and integrity” (Quality, 2011-2012). As previously mentioned, I am a mother and I work full- time, so having the ability to work and earn my degree from home is an incentive that took priority. My goal is to become a competent practitioner, planning to offer support and attainable resources to the homeless population, with a focus on mental health in my community. Walden’s mission to provide “a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (Mission, 2011-2012) aligned well with my future professional goals. Social Change As a child I lived in a neighborhood where the homeless and mentally challenged populations were not treated like human beings. In my adulthood I’ve noticed that this is a problem that exists all over. As previously mentioned, Walden support for social change is parallel with my goal is to provide support and attainable resources to the homeless population, with a focus on mental health in my community. According to Walden’s social change, “Walden supports positive social change through the development of principled, knowledgeable, and ethical scholar-practitioners, who are and will become civic and professional role models by advancing the betterment of society” (Social Change, 2011-2012). Although all of Walden’s outcomes relate to my professional and academic goals, creating “new knowledge dedicated to the improvement of social conditions, and to positively impact society by putting that knowledge into practice, by modeling their learning through action, and by being civically engaged” (University Outcomes, 2011-2012) is the outcome that I believe specifically narrates my professional and academic goals to becoming a scholar- practitioner.
