wood siding and old faded and peeling paint. They appear to be sturdy, thoughpartially neglected. They are built on blocks and not on concrete slabs. Many of them have screen doors on the sides of the homes. There are only a few newer homes constructed by brick. There is a small trailer park just past the railroad tracks with very old single wide trailers that appear dirty and falling apart. Many have foil on the windows and others have plywood on some windows. Majority of the homes are single family homes only a few very old small apartment complexes. There is only one long-term care facility in the town.● Common Meeting PlacesWhere do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there and what hours of the day?The most common hang out places are the local corner stores and an old car wash. Next to the carwash is a gazebo that also plays as a gathering place. There are mainly African American men gathering at these locations with the exception of a few Hispanic men. It appears that the men gather between the hours of 7:00am to 5:00pm. Coming and going throughout the day. There is a large park located next to one of the schools with basketball courts and a covered pavilion that some of the nearby kids gather at. The kids gather often after school around 3:00. On weekends the kids come and go all throughout the day. ● Indicators of Growth or DeclineIs this a “thriving” community or does it look “run down?” Is there new or ongoing construction? Businesses and Industries coming to the area? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas clean and well-kept. Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti? The community appears run down with little to no new structures. All of the structures look pre-existing and look to date back to the 70’s and 80’s. The only newer structures are the added fast-food restaurants. The roads running through town are newer and wide with a recent expansion adding a turn lane. They have recently added a small shopping center in town off the freeway andare currently building another one. There does not appear to have any new businesses or industries coming to the town of Willis. While the existing buildings appear to old, they seem to clean and well kept. There is no sign of graffiti anywhere in town and the roads for the most part are clean and well 4465-5_19
kept. There is no evidence of any homeless people anywhere to be seen.
