forgiveness, Simon should have forgiven him because that’s what God teaches us to do. The Bible says “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32). We have to forgive each other just as God forgave us, even though we were not worthy of his mercy. In order for there to be peace in our world, we have to learn to listen to God and do what he told us to do. Additionally, Simón should’ve forgiven the man because he acknowledged his wrongs and was sorry for what he did. In The Sunflower, the SS man says “I cannot die...without coming clean. This must be my confession.” (Wiesenthal, 53). The SS man knows that he has done wrong and chooses to admit it before he dies. . Wiesenthal also says “In his confession there was true repentance, even though he did not admit it in so many words. Not was it necessary, for the way he spoke and the fact that he spoke to me was proof of his repentance” (53). Simon realizes the soldier is genuine about his remorse and is actually sorry for what he has done. The soldier deserves to be forgiven because he identified his mistakes and accepts them, so Simon shouldn’t have walked away. There are, however, some valid arguments that someone opposed to this perspective may have. Sven Alkalaj said “Nobody who hasn’t bodily gone through what we went through will ever be able to understand fully” (The Symposium, 102). Alkalaj argues that Simon isn’t capable of actual forgiveness because he, himself, was not killed by the Nazis. This
