o An expanding cone may capture pollutants. Septic fluid gets into your water well o Saltwater intrusion renders the water unpotable. Beneath coastal land, freshwater “floats” on saltwater. Pumping causes the fresh/salt boundary to rise. Eventually, saltwater may enter the pumping well. o When groundwater is removed: Sediment grains compress; pore spaces collapse. The land surface cracks and sinks. o Subsidence is mostly irreversible. o Dramatic examples of subsidence are well known. o Iron and manganese—derived from rock weathering. Cause taste and odor problems; stain plumbing and laundry. o Hydrogen sulfide (H2S)—“rotten-egg gas.” Sulfur-reducing bacteria chemically change natural sulfates in water to hydrogen sulfide. E.g. deep wells, plumbing systems, water softeners and water heaters o Arsenic—naturally occurring poison Derived from weathering of: Pyrite-bearing sediments and metamorphic equivalents Silica-rich volcanic ash deposits EPA maximum contaminant limit (MCL) is 10 ug/L (ppb). The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
