Benjamin Disraeli- He was the leader of the conservative party and one time he was prime minister. He pushed through the Reform Bill of 1867. This gave the vote to many working class men which doubled the size of the electorate. He sponsored laws to improve public health and housing for workers. Emmeline Pankhurst- A leading suffragist became acquainted with the idea that only violence tactics would bring victory. She and other suffragists interrupted speakers in parliament and demanded votes for women. She petitioned and organized huge public demonstrations. When these meetings did not yield anything they moved to violent tactics such as smashing windows and burning buildings. She and other women including her daughters Christabel and Sylvia were arrested and jailed. Napoleon III- Once the revolution of 1848 ended, he set up the second empire. He appealed to all classes and ideology and they were attracted by his name since they remember the old days. But he does not bring France neither glory nor an empire. He ruled almost like a dictator since he could appoint his cabinet, the upper house of legislature, and many officials. He lifted some censorship and gave the legislature more power. He issued a new constitution that extended democratic rights. He invested in industry and railroad building and Ferdinand De Lesseps an entrepreneur built the Suez Canal so France enjoyed a good economy. He legalized labor unions, extended public education to girls, and created a small public health program. His worst failures were in foreign affairs like he tried to place Maximilian an Austrian Hapsburg Prince on the throne of Mexico but Mexico revolted with the U.S. on it’s side. He then helped Italy against Austria and gained some lands but then a unified Italy came and emerged as a rival against them and Bismarck provoked them into war where he was captured. Theodor Herzl- A hungarian Jewish journalist living in France called for Jews to form their own separate state where they would have all their rights exercised. He helped to launch modern zionism(a movement devoted to rebuilding a Jewish state in Palestine.) He organize the first Zionist congress in Basel, Switzerland. David Livingstone- An explorer missionary who wrote about many peoples he met with more sympathy He opposed the slave trade which was a profitable business and he believed the only way to end it was to open the place to christianity and trade. Muhammad Ali- The governor of Egypt and to strengthen Egypt he introduced reforms. He improve tax collection. Reorganized the landholding system, and backed large irrigation projects to increase farm output. He also encouraged the development of local industry which helped to
increase Egyptian participation in world trade. He brought western military experts to Egypt to help him build a well trained modern army. He conquered some lands and then he died.
