Chile and the United States do share some religious holidays that are celebrated. Christmas and Easter are the two religious holidays that both countries recognize and celebrate in similar styles. Some Roman Catholic holidays are celebrated in both but more so in Chile as it

GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 17 has a much higher Roman Catholic population ratio than the United States. One such holiday is Mardi Gras as it is known in the United States. In Chile it is known as the Carnival (Jones, Rowell, Armando, Lopez, Zacharias, Cleotilde, Inocencia, Tillis, Zaragoza & Raymundo, 2004, p. 91-92). Though Chile is known for having high moral and ethical standards when conducting business, the same cannot be said of the United States. The United States has however become the leader in pushing for corruption legislation to help eliminate corruption from business transactions. The United States policy against corruption on a global scale began with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in 1977 (Vuona, 2019, p. 981-982). The use of bribery in global business transactions significantly decreased after the passing of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Values and attitudes may provide some of the strongest contrasts between the United States and Chile, specifically in relation to the family first attitude the Chileans display while citizens in the United States are known for spending more time at work to further their careers so they can advance their financial status. Working overtime in the United States is not just accepted as necessary but has also become the norm in many jobs, especially those that are salary positions. In Chile, working overtime is seldom done and it is definitely not expected as time with the family must come first. Another major difference in the United States and Chile is the gender equality status in managerial roles. The United States has made great strides towards gender equality in managerial positions in its economy with 51% of the managerial positions being held by women. In Chile, women account for only 35% of the work force and less than 10% of the upper managerial and executive positions (Javalgi, et al, p. 234-239).

GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 18 Some mannerisms are shared between the United States and Chile. One is the handshake. The handshake is used as a greeting in both the United States and Chile. In Chile, however there will be less space between each other when shaking hands as the personal space boundary in Chile is much smaller than it is in the United States. In the United States anything more than a handshake may be misconstrued by the receiver but in Chile anything less than a good handshake for everyone in the group would be rude (Carpenter, et al, p. 33). Both the United States and Chile have a free market economy, however, the free market economy in Chile has more freedoms than the free market economy in the United States. Two factors have contributed to this statistic. The first is the slow but steady involvement of the United States government into business and heavier regulations imposed by the government.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
