Medicare and Medicaid are terrific programs in which the elderly, the disabled and those who would otherwise go without healthcare can get the care that they need. When a facility accepts payment through these programs, they are under extreme scrutiny about its practices and procedures. This can often be daunting, but I think that it helps to keep us as nurses and all healthcare providers in tune with the latest evidence practice and procedures. Nurse educators and the curriculum that they teach needs to be constantly evolving to ensure that these standards are met. We should always want to do the best for our patients and provide the care that they deserve and this is a way in which we are held accountable for our actions. I feel that teaching students the basic concepts of nursing, collaboration with others, and prioritization and building upon these tools will ultimately lead to achievement of these goals. The idea that American citizens of any group, any age/race/gender/socioeconomic class will have access to affordable health care brings with it a huge responsibility to provide healthcare workers to fulfill those needs. Healthcare workers from all walks of life as healthcare in America is a global issue. Providing the education to students interested in healthcare requires advanced practice nurse educators to impart that education. It is a continuous cycle that requires much from the profession of nursing. The government has taken great measures to help provide for the needs of the nursing profession to accomplish these goals: funding to support nursing education, especially for advanced degrees for nurse educators, availability of loan monies, work towards retention of practicing nurses are some examples ((Billings & Halstead, 2016). Also, the idea of nurse-managed healthcare centers that will bring accessible care to more of the population that needs it and open up opportunities for advanced practice nurses in education and clinical fields (Billings & Halstead 2016). So exciting! The profession of nurse educator, then, is affected by greater expectations to provide more doctoral-level educators (which are in short supply) to educate more advanced practice
educators (which are also in short supply) to instruct even more entry level clinical nurses (which are also in short supply). Hence the continuous loop :). Many different strategies are already in use, such as on- line advanced degree programs (such as this one :) ) which allow for working students and educators to have access to advanced degree programs, helping to increase the needed number of educators/practitioners (Pearsall, Hodson-Carlton, & Flowers, 2012).
