Choosing the correct members of the team according to their cultural backgrounds is just as important, if not more important than making sure each medical discipline involved in rounds and shift hand-off report is present. An organization cannot provide patient-centered, culturally competent care without making sure it has adequate representation of diversity amongst its staff members. A diverse organization makes it possible for staff to continue to learn from each other and constantly work towards providing the type of culturally competent care needed in any hospital setting. The team should be carefully chosen to make sure that all cultures are represented, as much as is possible, in order to get a better idea of how to proceed in the most patient-centered, culturally competent way possible.
ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP C158 15 Leadership Theories (D2) The leadership style utilized to build this multi-disciplinary team would be the Transformational Leadership Theory. According to Sullivan (2012), “transformational leadership emphasizes the importance of interpersonal relationships. Transformational leadership is not concerned with the status quo, but with effecting revolutionary change in organizations and human service (p.43).” The focus of transformational leadership is to merge motives, values, desires and goals of both leaders and followers into a common cause. The transformational leader’s goal is to promote and/or foster staff members’ commitment to the vision or idea (Sullivan.2012). A transformational leader can motivate and steer staff in the direction of reaching higher expectations for themselves and the people around them. This type of leader can inspire and motivate staff members to set higher goals for optimal patient and family-centered care, teamwork throughout the organization, vision, desires and empathy towards the human condition. A transformational leader can help others find their leadership qualities and encourage them to use these qualities to obtain the best results for their patients, families, co-workers, organization and themselves (Sullivan.2012). The Transformational Leadership Style will aid in pulling together the multi-disciplinary team by allowing for every individual on the team to feel like an equal part of the team. The transformational leader of this team would make it clear that each team member has a vital role to play in implementing this change. No one role is more important than the other is; and that the title one holds outside of the team does not dictate that their suggestions or ideals will be more or less important than that of other members.
