When walking through the store the girls walk with confidence, with Queenie having the most confident stride. They walk through the store as if nobody is there, but they know everyone is watching them. The girls are in position of power as long as they do not acknowledge the men’s interests. Sammy and Stokesie both show sexual interest in the girls. On the other hand, Lengel tries to challenge the girls by embarrassing them. He is not happy with their boldness so he rudely assumes that they know just how inappropriate they are dressed. Queenie, blushing, commented back, stating that the girls are dressed appropriately and implies Lengel is just being a jerk. The girls have a transformative influence on the males, primarily Sammy. In the effect of his yearning for Queenie, Sammy’s dreams stirred, and he takes a spontaneous rung to alter his life. Sammy’s actions purely motivated by his desire are inseparable from it. Sammy displays prowess in both observing others and gathering perceptions from his opinions, however the girls suggest the real unknown of other minds. Sammy characterizes the women that come into the store are all alike. They wait for him to make a mistake at the register so they can reprimand him. Sammy assumes he knows everything about his coworkers as well, by categorizing both of them.
When the girls arrive in Sammy’s store, he wonders what a mystery the girls’ minds can be. He tries to figure out the girls but in the end, it seems he has no clue. After he makes a scene about quitting, to his chagrin, the girls act as if he is nonexistent. After quitting in hopes of impressing the girls, Sammy is confused about his decision to quit his job at A&P.
The narrator of A&P , Sammy, is an opinionated, ironic, disgruntled teen with a strong curiosity in the opposite sex and a keen sense of observation. Sammy notices all around him, and he soaks in each feature of the girls’ bodily appearance. The texture and patterns of their bathing suits to the diverse areas of their tan lines, Sammy was interested in these girls. He made sure to soak in every detail of the situation. He even made a comment about Queenie’s bathing suit top hanging off her shoulders. “You never know for sure how girls' minds work (do you really think it's a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glassjar?)” (Mays). This shows Sammy is still immature and does not know much about the opposite sex.
