different scenarios and phenomena Libertarians see the Market as providing the Solution, while seeing the Government as having created the Problem. In looking at what would replace the above staples of contemporary society if Libertarians had their way, we see that they argue in favor of “ Market-Based Solutions ,” meaning that they believe the natural flow of money, goods, services, and consumption will create a self-styled form of regulation and provision that can take over many of the above functions, and moreover, a market-based solution can address the same problematic features of social existence more efficiently than anything a big government program can do. In this sense they argue things like licenses are unnecessary , and serve only to create a whole maze of red-tape and regulation which further hinders business, capital, and thus individuals. Instead of needing to get a license, say to practice medicine or to cook food for public consumption, one can simply open up their own medical clinic or restaurant. If someone eats your food and dies, or if a doctor kills a patient, then by word of mouth people will stop eating at that establishment, or they will stop frequenting that doctor’s office. In other words, it is their belief that the market will self-regulate itself according to consumers utilizing their purchasing power to frequent only beneficial and successful enterprises, leaving the bad and dangerous enterprises to drive themselves out of business. Take again the fire and police departments. It is the libertarian’s belief that the government should not pay for protecting its citizens in this manner, and that instead, if one wants personal protection of these 91
sorts then one needs to start a monthly contract with a private company which will offer these services. Thus if your house is burning, and you pay a monthly subscription to X-fire-company, then that company will come to your house and put out your fire – likewise with policing, medicine, ambulances, etc. Though if you fail to pay then your property would burn. The obvious benefit of Libertarian Societies is their ability to uphold and protect human liberty and the freedom of choice. If you want to open up a racist and sexist grocery store where only white men are allowed in then boy hooey who is to stop you. If you want to open your own gynecology clinic, if you want to run your own child sweatshop, or if you wanted to start your own school you can!!! You know that Puppy-Launching cannon you always wanted, or what about that prostitution ring you thought about starting, or heck, what about that meth-lab you’ve been itching to build – well all that and more are protected from and allowed to exist according to Libertarian ethics. If freedom is what you want then freedom of this sort is what Libertarianism offers.
