attitudestowardthereadingmaterial.Andfinally,aquestionnairewhichsolicitedstudents'attitudestowardsvariousaspectsofthereadingmaterialandstudywasadministeredthelastweekofthestudy.Subjects27ThestudytookplaceattwodifferentcollegesbothlocatedinPortland,Oregon.Thenumberofundergraduatestudentsinvolvedinthestudytotalledthirtyone.Sixteenweretaughtwithfictionandfifteenweretaughtwithnonfictionwiththeresearcherteachingbothgroups.ThefictiongroupconsistedofeightfemalesandeightmaleswhohadresidedintheUnitedStatesforanaverageoffiveyears.MosthadattendedAmericanhighschools.ThenonfictiongroupwasmadeupofninefemalesandsixmaleswhohadbeenintheUnitedStatesforanaverageofsevenmonths.Thefictiongroupdisplayedawiderangeofnationalities:Iranian,Korean,Filipino,Cambodian,Laotian,Vietnamese,EasternEuropean,EthiopianandThai.Ontheotherhand,thenonfictiongroupwasfairlyhomogeneouswithallJapanesestudentsexcepttwo,onefromKuwaitandtheotherfromCameroon.AlthoughthelengthoftimeintheUnitedStatesandnationalitiesdifferedfromonegrouptotheother,studentsinbothgroupswereintheirlateteensandearlytwenties.Academically,thegroupsalsodisplayeddifferences.Thestudentstaughtwithfictionhadahigherskilllevel
