CHAPTER THREE3.0 ACTIVITIES PERFORMEDDuring my 14 week internship period at the Nairobi County Government I was charged with thefollowing duties and responsibilities.Preparing imprest warrants and encumbering them in the system (IFMIS).Doing cash payments using Integrated Financial Management System (IFMIS).Preparing payment vouchers and invoicing them.Defining suppliers and employees in the system.Running GoK Vote books for specified periods in the system.Calculating the VAT and retention fees payable by contractors.Journalizing payments in their respective batches in the system.Record keeping, indexing and file management.Attending meetings and other functions as requested to by the administration.Verification and preparation of imprest warrants and petty cash. Creating journal entries in integrated financial management systems.Updating the books of the section.Compiling weekly and monthly expenditure report for the department. Budget monitoring of the section.Sorting and filing invoices, receipts, delivery notes and statements. Reconciliation of the books of accounts. Typing. Printing, photocopying and filing of office correspondences.Other duties as assigned by the chief accountant.My internship activities were not only limited to these. There arose other duties along the wayespecially when all accounts were to be closed or to be audited. The auditor would requirecertain information which was not in the normal schedule of the activities that I ran, and so Iwould be assigned other duties, for instance, retrieving the required documents from the variousfiles.16
CHAPTER FOUR4.0 IMPACTS OF THE INTERNSHIPRight from the first day, I have being exposed and mentored in line with my career. That is in theaccounting and finance fields. I have obtained skills that have motivated me to even desire toknow more and be professional. I reported and worked from Monday to Friday just like anyother employee, and reported before 8 am and left at 5pm. That means that I had to work like
