What are the controversies inherent in stem cell research?Does the information in this discussion topic alter your original ideas about stem cells? My understanding of stem cells isn’t much. I’ve heard the term before, and all I know about it is that it has to with the way cells in the body heals or regenerates itself. Stem cells are cells with the ability to divide for indefinite periods in culture and to give rise to specialized cells (Stem Cell Basics 2015). Stem cells are important because they have regenerative abilities; they generate replacement cells that are lost through normal wear and tear, injury and diseases, and have the potential for treating diseases like heart disease and diabetes (Stem Cell Basics 2015). The difference between the embryonic and adults stem cell is their origin. The embryonic stem cells come from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized. The adult stem cell is found among cells in tissue or organs and has the ability to renew itself and can produce some or all of the major specialized cell types of a tissue or organ (Stem Cell Basics 2015). Controversies that have come about are that adversaries of embryonic stem cell research compare the destruction of an embryo to an abortion. They believe that the embryo constitutes life because it has the potential to fully develop into a human being. Those
