iii. Opportunities In order to stay relevant in the smartphone market, companies must continuously innovate and release new products every year. One of Apple’s current weaknesses is that it must increase funding into research and development year after year in order to stay competitive in the market. However, the company is currently considering expanding research and development into new areas and business markets. According to Fortune, “Apple is ramping up R&D because they have a few big bets that require a massive increase in investment… The two most logical areas for these bets are wearables and personal transport initiatives. One of the greatest threats to Apple, Inc. is the ever-increasing amount of competition. Competitors have gone to great lengths in order to makes products with copy-cat features in order to compete. However, many of these products are often sold at a significantly cheaper price in order to underrun iPhone sales. Apple has faced intense competition from other smartphone companies. Apple has overthrown Nokia and Microsoft, and is constantly in battle with Samsung, Google, and other companies. While Apple must focus on innovating in order to maintain their competitive edge by adding new features to its already existing products, it is much easier for competitors to make carbon copy clones of Apple’s products. Apple will need to further protect itself from competitors via patents and copyright laws in order to protect itself from competition and maintain its competitive edge. The company must also continue to innovate and add new features to its already existing product line. B. Prioritized List As Apple continues into 2017, the company is faced with many emerging competitors hoping to take down the tech giant Apple Inc. In this year, the company will have to continue to push forward with its strengths of brand image and continuous innovation. By continuously innovating superior products, this will enable the company to power past the weakness of consistent legal battles and an unstable product line. As Apple pushes on into 2017, the company has plans to innovate new devices and products in order to mitigate its overdependency on the iPhone. Apple is already taking charge of new opportunities presented to them by ramping up research and development, reestablishing the iPhone SE on the market, and pursue new

markets including development in the autonomous vehicle market. By doing so, this allows Apple to push back against the threats of competitors in China and domestically, the reliance of Apple’s premium branding which prevents the company from competing in the lower end market, and its overdependency on third-party developers.
