Mixed Signals We all have blind spots – we change our self-conception when we see ourselves through others’ eyes o Outsider’s perspective provides info that you yourself miss We are sometimes biased by our need to see ourselves in a good light that we become strangers to ourselves o To be understood by others, first step is understanding ourselves Everything that can be known about you can be divided into 4 categories o (1) Bright spots – things known by both you and others Traits like extroversion, talkativeness, and dominance are easily observable o (2) Dark spots – things known by neither you nor others Include deep unconscious motives that drive your behaviors o (3) Personal spots – things known only by you Others know how you behave, but they don’t know your intentions or feelings o (4) Blind spots – things known only by others Include factors like level of hostility & defensiveness, attractiveness, intelligence
