engine design caused many to doubt its ability to cross the vast Atlantic. Previous attempts had  all included multi-engine planes. Also, co-pilots had been a staple on the 3,500 mile journey, but  Lindbergh intended to fly alone. The reason why the american public was enthralled by the fact  that Charles Lindbergh flew alone was because it seemed impossible until he completed the  mission. This is why Charles Lindbergh is a hero.
