Allowing the people to fear him without hating him. 5. Machiavelli states that a prince must not worry about the reproach of cruelty when it is a matter of keeping his subjects united and loyal. In this case, too much clemency can lead to uprisings and civil war. Machiavelli cites the example of Florence, which was afraid to intervene with the required force in Pistoia and was in turn destroyed through civil conflict. If a prince needs to be cruel to keep his subjects united and loyal, so be it. Cruelty can serve the greater good. Which means if you are keeping your subjects safe then do not worry about being cruel taking care of you subjects outweighs the perception of cruelty? Cruelty would be defined in this instance as keeping order. 6. Oliver North's self-defense in the aftermath of the Iran-Contra affair would be an example of how trying to avoid cruelty in politics can adversely affect or be beneficial to society. I believe there has to be a moderation of cruelty in politics. 7. Machiavelli cannot write about society or statecraft without bringing in ethics. Whether his ethics are morally relevant or not they are still a part of his writing. I do believe that political science is viewed with the ethical lens of whoever is doing the research.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
