Monday, January 28, 2019 Folk culture: refers to cultural products and practices developed over time within a particular community or socially identifiable group and are communicated to those who tend to be known to one another Mass culture: depends on electronic media to convey its message to the largest possible audience in order to secure maximum profit, which is its ultimate goal - Terms can serve to make useful distinctions between kinds of cultural production The culture of everyday life - May define popular culture as “the communicative practices of everyday life” - Definition accomplishes 3 things: Signals the inclusion of mass media alongside the practices of everyday life Emphasizes the meaningful nature of popular culture Highlights the issue of power that always and overtly dogs the production of culture The Politics of Popular Culture - Culture reflects and influences social organization and the distribution of power Capitalism An economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution and geared toward the generation of profit - Is the dominant economic system in the world today - In capitalism economies, creating, distributing, and exchanging wealth lie In the hands of individuals in corporations - Capitalism enables the production pf popular culture THE AMERICANIZATION OF POPULAR CULTURE - In the US, serious interest of pop culture was motivated by the Cold War 2
