climate they live in. They believe all trees have spirits, good or bad. Since the trees are living things to them, they need to be thanked for their resources. The Nenet women do so by preparing a sacrificial feast. The women gather amongst the trees and then eat the food together as a group. By doing so the women are asking to be forgiven. (2) The Nenets are a pastoral society, the word 'pastoral' comes from the Latin root word pastor, which means shepherd. They herd reindeer and they travel great distances every year. This community travels from their northern pastures to their winter pastures, south of the Artic Circle. The trek they embark on is about 700 kilometers in continuously plummeting temperature. They rely on their livestock for some of their meals and clothing. The other resources they have, they purchase in an administrative center of the Rosea Sovkhoz. The supplies they purchase are matches, tobacco, butter, sugar, tea, bagels, flour, bread, and tinned fish. Their supplies need to last enough for their 6-month travel. Due to their schedule they are able to make purchases twice a year, in Spring and in Autumn. As pastoralist, the Nenets can accumulate more possessions then a community of hunters and gatherers.
