The function of this tissue is to support organslike the heartand the kidneys (provide a fat padding) and to serve as insulation. It also functions to storeenergyas triacylglycerolin adipocytes (fat cells). When the body runs out of glucose energy (ready energy) the body will resort to energy in fat stored as triacylglycerol.-Blood– extracellular matrix is plasma fluid and does not contain any fibers. Composed of Red Blood Cells and White Blood Cells.-Cartilageconnective tissue – extracellular matrix is gel-like because of the polysaccharide sugars that make it like molasses.

-Types of Cartilage:HyalineCartilage(a kind of cartilage) is found along the C-shaped rings of the tracheaand around the articulating surfaces of the bone. Hyaline Cartilage is the most abundant cartilage in the human body. ElasticCartilageis the second most abundant cartilage in the body. It is found in the pinna(auricle) region of the ear, larynx, epligottis. It has a lot of elastic fibers and more pliable than hyaline cartilage.FibroCartilageis the rarest form of cartilage. Makes up the intervertebraldiscs of the vertebrae. This cartilage also links to the pubisbonestogether. Abundant with collagen fibers. It is unique because it does not have a perichondreum. However, fibro cartilage is always in close proximity with either hyaline or elastic cartilage (which get blood supply from their perichondreum) and therefore fibro cartilage is able to stay alive. -Characteristics of Cartilage:Cartilage gets its shock absorbing capacity through water present in the matrix. The sugars dissolved in the matrix makes the matrix high in solute. This will attract water because water will want to dilute the solutes. The attraction of water makes cartilage very hydrated. Has Chondrocyteslocated in the lacunaeof the cells. Chondrocytes were chondroblasts that got caught in the cartilage they were producing and became inactive in the lacunae.Cartilage is Avascular(has no blood supply). Chondrocytes get nutrients and get rid of waste by diffusion through a band of connective tissue called a perichondreum, but diffusion is distance limited. The perichondreum has an outer fibrous layer that contains blood cells (dense irregular collagenous connective tissue) and an inner cellular layer (mesenchymal stem cells& chondroblasts).-Boneconnective tissue – extracellular matrix is calcified calcium and hard. It has an outer connective tissue that supplies it with blood called a periosteum. The periosteum has an outer fibrous layer that contains blood cells (dense irregular collagenous connective tissue) and an inner cellular layer (mesenchymal stem cells& osteoblasts).-Characteristics of BoneWhile making bone, osteoblasts can get stuck in their matrix and become osteocytes trapped in the lacunae.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
