There are two types of SI units, base units and derived units. Base units are the simple measurements for time, length, mass, temperature, and amount of substance, electric current and light intensity. Derived units are constructed from the base units, for example, the watt , i.e. the unit for power, is defined from the base units as m 2 ·kg·s -3 . Other physical properties may be measured in compound units, such as material density, measured in kg/m 3 . 1.3.4 UNIT CONVERSION METRIC TO IMPERIAL The tables below give the unit conversions from metric to imperial system of measurements and vice versa for various parameters. Table 1.3a Length Unit Conversion from Metric to Imperial Metric US or Imperial 1 millimetre [mm] 0.03937 in 1 centimetre [cm] 10 mm 0.3937 in 1 metre [m] 100 cm 1.0936 yd 1 kilometre [km] 1000 m 0.6214 mile Table 1.3b length unit conversion from Imperial to Metric US or Imperial Metric

Follow these steps: 1. Find the right conversion number from the tables above 2. Multiply.
9 3. If the answer is in the thousands or millions (or thousand th s or million th s), then drop the zeros and use the correct prefix The following examples will help: Example 1 What is 2,000 yards in Metric? 1. In Table 1.3b it shows that 1 yd = 0.9144 m (metres) 2. Multiply 2,000 x 0.9144 = 1,829 m 3. 1,829 m would be better expressed as 1.829 km (kilometres) Example 2 What is 50 cubic foot in Metric? 1. In the Table 1.3f it shows that 1 cu foot = 0.0283 m 3 (cubic metres) 2. Multiply 50 x 0.0283 = 1.415 m 3 3. Looks Good !

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
