In the opening scene, a woman is beaten and raped, and the director maintains two concurrent tones in the sequence. The female’s pain is performed and acknowledged solemnly; however, the rapist’s attacks are stylized comically, with explosions of hyperbolic sounds accompanying the punches. Simply put, the director turns the rapist into a punchline without jeopardizing the woman’s agony, although one is left wondering whether Miike cares about the girl or if he accentuates her pain to enlighten the scene with a melodramatic texture to counterpoint the violence’s flippancy. This is to say that Miike is unconcerned with morality than with offering a canvas with many moods and colors. In the meantime, boyish Ichi is outside his apartment window observing the rape and masturbating vigorously - an act that typifies the

Surname 3 audience’s delight in barbarism ( Hallam 210). Afterwards, the movie’s title ascends from a semen pool that Ichi leaves on a potted plant, implying a physicalizing of id. Ichi later summons up courage to confront the rapist, killing him. He reassuringly tells the prostitute that she has nothing to worry about, as he will be the one to beat her. Therefore, while the ultraviolence is shocking, it works to exemplify the theme of pleasure in violence, like nutrient to evil. Reality The film explicitly outlines that the intimidating Kakihara is a weird sadomasochist who loved being beaten by Anjo. With his boss gone, he despairs that nobody will be capable of bringing him painful pleasures as Anjo did. A short romantic rendezvous with Karen (Anjo’s sadistic girlfriend who strangely expects others to understand her alternating Japanese, Cantonese, and English dialogue) leaves Kakihara extremely dissatisfied. Kakihara enjoys receiving pain almost as much as he likes doling it out; however, he is unable to find someone to hurt him to full satisfaction ( Ciecko 129). Kakihara's mission to find his boss changes after seeing Ichi's brutal works, and at the end, he yearns to face Ichi to encounter the unrivaled pain that Ichi alone can give. It is ironical how Kakihara becomes obsessed with Ichi the more he hears about him, which is an act that only seems surreal – no normal person would want to confront Ichi after witnessing the violence he unleashed in Shinjuku. Kakihara stands out as a great villain who is less concerned with being a yakuza than the pleasures of receiving and giving the bloody reprisals attached to the job. He loves the opportunity to cross-examine suspects and if they are innocent, the better. This means more enemies he can happily send to the brink of death and beyond. It does not occur to him that
