continues to affect your beliefs and actions, even after you discover it is false” (UT News). This tends to be one of the biggest negatives of fake news, as Franklin Roosevelt once said "Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely" (Daily Herald, 1). Although there are many negatives that arise from fake news there can also be a positive side of fake news. As author Jay McGregor said in his articles in Forbes, fake news “has forced a number of news organisations to invest in fact-checking and to put it front and centre of its coverage” (Forbes, 1). This is a positive aspect of fake news because with it being almost everywhere nowadays, more people are diving deeper into it and not just being gullible to it, so to say. A good example of this is from a writer named Ryan David Mullins, he states, “Truth is not something that just lands in your News Feed. You have to work for that shit. It takes effort” (Medium, 1). As fake news is in our timelines in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google, etc.. it becomes really hard to differentiate between the real and fake and has brought it to our attention we have to, again, dive deeper and understand the topic more. By diving in deeper and making people investigating on their own to find out if something is fake or not this it is giving “people… a fundamental sense” (NPR). As the internet keeps on expanding we will be seeing more fake news, but it is up to us the people to choose how we will actually take it in. IX. Proposed solutions/resolutions: Google and Facebook announced in November that they plan to restrict advertisements on fake news stories. Facebook has enlisted the International Fact Checking Network (IFCN). Facebook users in the US and Germany can flag articles that they believe are deliberately false. Those articles will then be viewed and checked by third-party fact checkers signed with the IFCN. These fact checkers

come from organisations such as the Washington Post and, a website that is well known for debunking urban legends. These posts then get a “false” tag. In Germany, lawmakers are proposing to criminalise people who post fake news. They are enforcing a law that demands social media to remove fake news. Sites that do not remove them could face fines up to 50m euro. In 2009, the French newspaper, Le Monde, set up a fact checking unit called Les Decodeurs (The Decoders). They have devised a web extension called Decodex. The way it works is that once you install the extension and visit a fake news site, you get a pop up that says “warning this is a fake news site.” If you click on the tool, it will grant you access to a paper describing what the website is and why it is not trustworthy. Decodex also allows readers to search a database consisting of over 1000 websites and social media profiles. These sites are divided into four categories: unreliable (fake news), sites that regularly post false information, satire, and reliable.
