• “Pretty standard questions, but most of my interviews had to do with who I am as a person and what my life experiences have brought up in me.” • “I worked here in various capacities before and during law school (intern, file clerk, law clerk, and summer associate) before I got hired as an associate attorney.” OUR SURVEY SAYS Vault’s Verdict: Associates at Holland & Knight are pleased with quality work opportunities, great mentoring, relatively reasonable work/life balance, and an actual chance to make partner one day. But while they understand that their firm is fiscally conservative, associates still lament not being paid market-rate salaries and the lack of transparency into non- lockstep associate pay. Satisfaction • “I think I get substantive and meaningful work more than other second year associates at other firms. I have had the opportunity to argue a motion to dismiss which I do not think would have been possible at other places. Getting used to different partners’ styles can be difficult.” • “I like what I do and have been given the opportunity to take ownership of areas in which I have more expertise; I have flexibility in terms of hours and are able to work from home when needed (although not as part of a schedule).” • “The work is great, the pay is far below market and there is zero transparency about how associate comp is determined. The firm advertises itself as paying market, but I don’t know a single associate past 2nd year (which is lockstep) who makes market salaries. On average, we’re about 40-50K below market.” Firm Culture • “Culture is collegial and the majority of associates and partners are friendly. Most organized social activity is during the summer (for obvious reasons), but we frequently do happy hours throughout the year. We also do a March Madness bracket and a fantasy football league that gives a great work/life mix.” • “Not many young lawyers in the office, but there are still several social events, although most are in-office. Flexibility of schedules and overall culture is great.” • “I’m personally involved in increasing this aspect. Everyone here is positive and almost always a delight to work with. There’s a weakness in associate togetherness that I am working to change, but thankfully since people are very pleasant it only takes a little extra legwork.” • “The firm is very much into seeing you succeed. Socially, people have lives outside of the office and the firm accommodates that, which is heartening.”

At least twice a year, there is a presentation on firm finances and how each attorney fits into that picture and how we can work toward the firm’s financial goal. However, the firm is not as transparent as I would like when it comes to associate compensation and bonuses. There is no rubric (or least a rubric known to the

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
