Using the Servant Leadership to Maximize Strengths and Mitigate Pitfalls Servant leadership is founded on the understanding that the interest of the followers should come first while that of the leader comes second. Servant leaders focus on the employees’ needs while acknowledging their perspectives (Spears, 2009). The servant leadership is available to provide all the resources necessary to assist the employees to meet their personal and work-related goals. Similar to the charismatic leaders, servant leaders involve the followers in the decision making and collaborate with them to instill a sense of a community in a team. This leadership increases trust, engagement, and strengthen the relationship with the team members among other stakeholders. The servant leaders should exemplify persuasion, listening, empathy, healing, foresight, and stewardship (Spears, 2009). The leader should understand that servant leadership entails focusing on the people’s needs as opposed to their feelings. The leader should not fear or refrain from giving the followers negative feedback or making ostracized decisions as long as the outcome is increased productivity.
