a consequence of his leadership behaviour. Although the style approach has its strengths, it, inevitably, has its limitations in analysing Gord Downie as a leader. Transformational Approach: Strengths The transformational approach is a broad-based perspective, which applies to many dimensions of leadership (Northouse, 2018). One strength in this approach is that has intuitive appeal (Northouse, 2018). The approach describes how leaders are out-front sparking change, which is congruent with societies ideologies of leadership (Northouse, 2018). As Gord is truly the frontman of his group, The Tragically Hip, it makes sense that people would describe him as a leader in this manner. Another strength in the transformational approach is that it places strong emphasis on followers needs (Northouse, 2018). It focuses on the leader's ability and desire to move followers towards higher standards (Northouse, 2018). In looking at Downie, his goal is to motivate Canadians to move towards reconciliation and focus more on the rights and needs of all Canadians, including our marginalized communities such as our Indigenous Peoples. The transformational approach adds an element of morality to the study of leadership, which fits well with Gord’s advocacy. Transformational Approach: Limitations Similarly, to the limitation of the styles approach, there is no concrete research stating that transformational leadership is able to transform individuals or societies (Northouse, 2018). Measuring the positive outcomes which might come as a result of the leaders’ behaviours is difficult, and there is no evidence that transformational behaviours are even associated with (Northouse, 2018). Again, although Downie is a charismatic and influential role model, it’s difficult to quantify the change that is brought by his actions.
