3.2.1 Changes due to Telecommuting With the improvement of communication technology, it is becoming easier and cheaper to send data more effectively over longer distances. As a result, more and more organizations are likely to offer telecommuting opportunities to their employees. In such cases, leaders cannot communicate with their subordinates face-to-face. That is, the physical aspect of communication will be hampered. Furthermore, in cognitive roles (where it is harder to track performance), it may be cumbersome to determine and track KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) of human resource. It may also become difficult to assess and change the motivational levels of these employees. 3.2.2 Changes due to Flex-Timing and Outsourcing A growing trend of Flex-timing and outsourcing of work-activities indicates that these flexible work arrangements may become more common in the future. It will thus become harder for leaders to coordinate teams in which some members are outsourced or avail flex-timing arrangements. It may also be hard to initiate quick actions under these circumstances. 3.2.3 Changes in Workplace Experts believe some fundamental changes will take place in workplaces around the world. 'Smart machines' and AI will begin to perform a lot of activities previously performed by humans (which means management of such systems is also a factor).
