he spirit is offended- assumption is the spirits have human like emotional responses - their anger provokes the sickness and then correct rituals (offering pork to the spirits) gets rid of the sickness Death and Storytelling in Indigenous Societies Oral traditions and discourse communities (shares common vocab, goals, and try to accomplish things through shared language and they know who is a part of their community) - Important in oral cultures as they are passed on throughout generations Melpa people of Papua New Guinea “An eldest brother refused to allocated a large pig from his sister’s bridewealth as a sacrifice to their dead parents. The young woman was returning to her natal home with some pork and took refuge in a sacrificial hut to sleep. Her dead mother’s brother entered, either in a dream or in a vision, and hid her in an earth oven covered with rubbish, where she saw the spirits of the dead come for a meeting:” - Spirits can travel and we can encounter them in dreams - When she hides in sacrificial pig hut for ancestors the conflict with the dead arises in the hut Now many spirits of the dead arrived for the meeting.
