Criminal justice is a central point for discussions about race and social justice in America. The Trayvon Martin Case displayed inequality towards a minority. George Zimmerman’s conversation shows that his self-defense actions came from Trayvon Martin’s appearance which alters the Stand Your Ground Law. Trayvon Martin was not posing a threat to Zimmerman therefor he had no right to proceed further.
Since this law has been implemented, there has been an increase in homicides. This gives me another reason to disagree with the Stand Your Ground Law. In a 2005 study, Florida's overall monthly homicide rate increased 24.4% and the homicide by firearm rate is up 31.6% (Journal of the American Medical Association). This law has allowed people to use firearms more frequently resulting in higher crimes, violence, and overall death of citizens. “The research backs up a similar study from 2013 finding an 8% average increase in homicide in states that passed Stand Your Ground Laws”. (Sanburn 2016) Not only has this law increased homicides in Florida, but this law increased the overall homicides within the United States. I believe this law brought more of a negative impact than a positive one based on the statistics and facts since this law was passed.
