 This provided an opening for a new system of order o The way of Old Europe had been eroded by WWI, the crash showed capitalism and liberal democracy’s flaws o Communism and fascism appeared as the new extreme alternatives Hitler’s Rise and Italian Expansion  1932: Commies and Nazis have significant presence in German Reichstag. Nazis the second largest party in Reichstag  1933: Hitler comes to power democratically on platform of blaming the Allies and Jews for Versailles and the Depression o Does so thru a coalition of support, many who did not truly support his most extreme views thought they could control him o He withdraws Germany from League of Nations, citing unfair treatment under Versailles o He begins blatantly violating the terms of the treaty  1934: Hitler has consolidated power and imposed iron fisted dictatorship o one of the most ruthless, all-encompassing tyrannical police states the world has ever seen  Oct 1935: Mussolini abruptly invades Ethiopia o Appeal to LofN by Ethiopians reveals the weakness of that institution o He wins in the next year after using poison gas  1936: Hitler has lead Germany out of the Depression through massive rearmament and public works o His econ policy is unsustainable unless Germany can begin to expand o Many Germans see Nazi prosperity as a worthy trade off for liberal freedoms and democracy o He beings to remilitarize the Rhineland, blatantly illegal  GB and France having political issues at home and so do nothing to respond Appeasement  March 1938: Hitler sends troops into his native Austria and annexes it o France and GB do nothing o Sept 1938: Hitler demands immediate cession of Sudetenland to Germany
o Czech government issues adamant refusal, instates martial law o Hitler sends troops to their boarder  Sept 15 1938: Chamberlain decides to meet with Hitler o He tells Hitler he will accept annexation in a series of phases  Hitler is amazed by this o Chamberlain goes to Czech to basically abandon his ally, saying Britain will not fight 
