Prevention = needed to know what causes mental health issues ○ Poverty ○ Must educate and train staff and professionals ○ Crisis intervention and emergency services (hospitals/jail?) ○ Ongoing psychiatric care ■ Outpatient ■ Inpatient ○ Daycare services ● Cuckoo's Nest ○ Represented a lot of social control ○ Custodial model ○ Long stays ○ No patient rights ○ Voluntary admissions ○ State had total control (legal/state) ○ Hospitals before deinstitutionalization (custodial care) ○ overcrowded One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest ● Randle McMurphy(Jack Nicholson) is committed to MI due to fights and unruly behavior in prison (was originally arrested for statutory rape) ○ Administration are suspicious as to whether he is actually mentally ill. ● Conflicts with head nurse, Nurse Ratchet. ○ Purposely pisses her off and encourages unrest in other patients. ○ Refuses to take medicine. ○ hops fence and hijacks bus to take patients on fishing trip. ● Administration suggests transferring him back to prison but nurse Ratchet insists on keeping him. ● Finds out that even though his prison sentence only had 68 days left, the hospital can keep him as long as they want. ○ Also learns that most patients are there voluntarily ● charlie lassick fellow patient freaks out over not having cigarettes so McMurphy breaks glass to nurses station and takes them.
○ him and two other inmates, chief (large native american man he befriends), and lassick are given shock therapy as punishment. ● Finds out chief isn't dumb and deaf as he pretends to be and promises they'll escape together. ● gets night guard to let in lady friends with alcohol and throws party in nurses station. gets friend rose to sleep with an inmate (Billy Bibbit who has a stutter) and falls asleep waiting for them to finish, so his escape plan fails ● Nurse ratchet walks in to see the place a complete mess and finds Billy (who no longer has a stutter) with the woman. ● tells Billy that she’s going to tell his mother (who Billy fears; his stutter returns) and then sends him for electroshock therapy ● Billy commits suicide while waiting in the doctor’s office ○ As a result, McMurphy attempts to strangle Nurse Ratchet but is torn off at the last second by guards ● McMurphy is not seen for some time but then Chief sees him returning to his bed in the middle of the night assisted by 2 guards. ○ Chief goes over to his bed saying he is ready to escape and sees that McMurphy has been given a lobotomy and is responseless. ○ He proceeds to smother Mcmurphy with his pillow, a mercy killing. ○ Chief then picks up the shower basin McMurphy had attempted and failed to lift earlier in the movie and busts open the front window and escapes.
